Last night’s drumming circle at Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden was a beautiful reminder of how restorative it can be to simply slow down and reconnect with ourselves, each other, and nature.
In South Walsham, nestled within 130 acres of peaceful woodland and waterways in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, Fairhaven offers a truly magical setting for mindful evenings like these. As we walked through the gardens towards the glade, we were surrounded by birdsong, winding pathways, and towering ancient trees — including oak trees believed to be over 1000 years old, standing quietly as witnesses to centuries of change. Originally part of the South Walsham Estate, Fairhaven has long been a place of reflection, beauty, and connection with the natural world.
We gathered first at the café, where the group began drumming together, slowly walking towards the glade. Over half of the group had never experienced drumming before, but it didn’t take long for everyone to settle into the rhythm. Along the walk we paused at intervals to observe our surroundings, notice our thoughts, and become more present with the moment.
Once we arrived at the glade, Julie from Healing Possibilities laid out a selection of cards, each with a different word written on it. Everyone chose a word that resonated personally with them, and we moved into a focused drumming exercise centred around that intention — allowing the rhythm to help embed the feeling into the body.
The evening ended with a calming grounding drumming meditation beneath the trees. By the close of the session, there was a noticeable shift in the group; people spoke about how busy life often leaves them disconnected and not fully present day to day, and how much calmer, lighter, and more relaxed they felt after taking this time to pause.
If you’re looking for something a little different this summer, I’ll be working alongside Julie from Healing Possibilities for Wednesday Wellbeing Evenings at Fairhaven throughout the summer months. Sessions will include drumming circles, meditation walks, mindfulness activities, and gong baths — all set within the peaceful surroundings of the gardens.
Starting every Wednesday at 7:30pm, with booking available via the Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden website.
